Tuesday 16th August 2011 was a history making day. It was the first time since 29th April 1905, (a gap of over 106 years) since County had played a competitive non-league latch at Edgeley Park. For me it followed 894 games I had seen us play on the hallowed turf as a Football League team Little were we to know on what was a pleasant evening that 9 years later we would still be outside of the FL – a period which encompassed another 213 home games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The non league odyssey had started 4 days previously at The New Lawn, Forest Green. It has ended in a draw and to be honest would have been an eye opener to many of the travelling fans who possibly, and ill advisedly, thought that a return to the FL was merely 9 months away. Having spent a fair bit of non-County spectating time on the non-league circuit I was under no illusions that this was going to be a hard task. Luton; Wrexham and Grimsby had demonstrated that in the previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team showed two changes from that which had turned out in Nailsworth the previous Friday. Gone was Danny Hall, after his solitary appearance in County colours and Tom Elliott replaced Martin Gritton. We were to see later in the game another ‘one appearance’ man in the form of Keigan Parker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game was settled by a single goal, and a cracker it was too. Euan Holden picked the ball up on the left and twisting and turning his way past a whole raft of Kettering defenders planted it into the net. We had picked up 4 points from the first two games and hopes were raised. It was however, to be another 7 before maximum points were gained again. We had by then settled into a series of draws, and the debacle off the field, as the Tony Evans saga unfolded, concluded with Dietmar Hamann’s departure in early November. By then the die was cast for nearly a decade of hard labour which was to follow<\/p>\n\n\n\n
