THE EARLY YEARS OF WATCHING COUNTY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took me a fair few years to become a regular. Not through lack of interest, but I played sport at school, (lacrosse as it turned out – my aptitude for football was not of the best!), and that took up Saturdays. After leaving school in 1972 I was away at University, and just about as far as was then possible from home, The academic years did of course afford me the first chance to see the Hatters on the road, at St James Park, Exeter, in January 1975. This is catalogued in Away Day 1<\/strong><\/a>. On finishing there I eventually returned home, after some temporary employment in the South West, and started picking up on visits to Edgeley Park. By the end of 1976 the list below catalogues the games I witnessed: The third one included the last appearance of George Best in a County shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On my 2nd visit to EP we faced Oldham in a Division 3, (Tier 3), game. County stood 3rd whilst the Latics were rock bottom, having picked up a mere 11 points from 22 games, 20 adrift of County. It looked a nailed on home banker, but it proved not to be the case. It ended goalless. The expectation, (sadly not fulfilled), certainly attracted a fair few. The crowd was 9,818. I never saw it bettered for a League game for nearly 29 years. The visitors all those years later were Manchester City. It was one of the truly great days. Stockport County 3-1 Manchester City. Says it all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
