I always enjoyed trips to Griffin Park, and certainly did for the one in September 2007. After coming so close to the play-offs the previous May the new season hadn’t started too well with only a couple of wins in the seven games preceding to the trip to West London the second of which was a home victory over Wrexham the previous Saturday. Anthony Elding had only hit the target twice in the 2007\/08 campaign but it was to be his day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referee Kevin Friend, (seen now on far more exalted stages than League 2), was aptly named, He certainly was County’s friend that day, and awarded us two penalties before the half time break, both of which Elding converted easily. A quarter of an hour into the second period, a long clearance from Conrad Logan, in the Hatters goal, was flicked on by Matty McNeil. Elding picked it up and struck home from inside the area. A hat-trick for him – only the second since Warren Feeney got one at Huddersfield a couple of years previously. In the interim Adam Le Fondre had gone one better, hitting 4 against Wrexham just a year or so before Elding’s triple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result made a for a good trip back. It was a penultimate visit for me to Griffin Park. I returned in 2009, (a 2-0 defeat), but our paths haven’t crossed since then, and should they ever do again it will be at the new stadium. Sadly, Griffin Park is no more…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
