I always enjoyed trips to Underhill. Part of the metropolis that area might be but it was a ground born out of non-league, that had been adapted for league football but without losing that character. A small main stand; covered terracing along the other side; plus two open ends.
December 2010 was my 5th and what transpired to be the last trip to Underhill. We were struggling at the wrong end of the table. Paul Simpson had come in as manager in the summer and had failed to make much of an impression, and the 8 games prior to the trip had produced only 7 points. Barnet were hardly doing much better so a slog of a match looked on the cards.
It turned out to be one of the very few highspots of the season. A goalless first half was followed by a George Donnelly goal, This was quickly cancelled out by an equaliser from Izale McLeod, so often a thorn in our side over the years. The game got to the last quarter of an hour when two quick strikes from Greg Tansey, (one a penalty), gave us the points.
For the rest of the season points were as rare as hen’s teeth. Twenty five games and only 17 points. Simpson was sacked within the week. Even leaving Underhill that evening there was no real thought that this was to be the last season in the Football League.
