Little did we know as we went up the M66 to Blackburn on 22nd October 1996 that the greatest season in the Club’s history was beginning to unfold. It had started off badly, with no win in the first 6 league games and the only bright spot was progressing in the League Cup with a win over Chesterfield. A victory over Plymouth set things going, and in the 10 games prior to visiting Ewood Park we had won 8, including a sensational 2nd leg League cup win over Sheffield United who were put to the sword to the tune o 5-2 at Bramall Lane.
The game at Blackburn, when County turned out in the famous, and now highly collectible, ‘Romania’ strip brought a 1-0 win, as Tim Sherwood misdirected a header from a trademark long throw from Mike Flynn past Tim Flowers, who, of course, was to spend an ill-fated loan period at EP a handful of years later.
A more than decent following from EP in a crowd of just under 14,000 celebrated wildly. And it wasn’t the only time that we showed the quality of the team on Premier League grounds that year. Draws at Upton Park and the Riverside together with an unforgettable night at The Dell were to follow. Added to which of course was a promotion achieved. Reflecting back some 24 years as I write this I am glad that I was there to see it. I managed 64 of the 67 games that season, and it is certainly something to recall with great affection.
And, for me, it started to come to fruition that night at Ewood….
