County had started the 2000/01 season with a win at Gillingham. However, the fine form at the back of 1999, which had promised so much, had ling disappeared as the 1999/00 season wended its way to a sorry end. And after the victory at Priestfield it was more of the same. Of the great team from 1996/97 only Mike Flynn and Kevin Cooper remained and it was clear to County fans that a struggle to maintain Championship standing was on the way. A League Cup exit, and only 5 points from the 12 matches which followed the game at Gillingham did not bode well.
Bolton arrived on 21st October, standing 4th in the table having lost only once. It promised to be another grim afternoon. The form book was turned upside down as County raced into a 3 goal lead, thanks to Andy Tod, (who proved to be a useful acquisition in his loan spall from Dunfermline); Jarko Wiss and Ian Moore. Three points looked to be there for the taking. But in true County fashion the nerves set in and Bolton drew level. That was until deep in injury time, when Aaron Wilbraham, smashed in the winner at the Cheadle End, occasioning scenes of great exultation.
It turned out to be one of the few highspots of the season, as County struggled, eventually successfully, to avoid the drop. Bolton, on the other hand, stepped up to the Premiership. Within 18 months of the game the Clubs were two divisions apart, as County’s Tier 2 days were ended with a relegation in 2002, just months after the last meeting, to date, of the Clubs in an FA Cup game at EP.
