Programme style 1976/77.
..
The programme featured is rom the Newport game where we won 2-1, (Barney Daniels and Peter Fletcher on target). It was the season Daniels picked up 19 goals. He was the proverbial one season wonder. Having come from Ashton United, (via a brief spell at Chester), he returned to Hurst Cross where he became a legend in Tameside non-league circles.

EP – A CITADEL IN 1977
..
Given the impoverished nature of our performances in the late 70’s 1977 saw a remarkable home record insofar as the games I saw. There were 27 games in total and only the two defeats. The second of those, an FA Cup 2nd round replay against Shrewsbury was hugely disappointing. It deprived us of a trip to Blackburn, (then in Division 2, which at the time was the 2nd Tier). The chance to play on a higher stage had gone. It was to be another 18 years before there was a visit to Ewood Park.
The highlight of the year was a 6-0 win over Hartlepool. Carl Halford and Eddie Prudham both picked up a brace, to add to strikes from Terry Park and a penalty from Alan Thompson. One thing that dawned on me as I looked back to the 27 home games I saw in 1977, (involving 26 different teams), was how many would go on to cross paths with us in non league. There were 11 of them; Aldershot; Cambridge; Darlington; Grimsby; Halifax; Hartlepool; Newport; Southport; Torquay: Workington and Wrexham. Four of those were in the guise of “phoenix clubs”. It is a real indciation of the movement and change in English football over the period.

I missed but the one home game in 1977. It was the League season opener against Watford, We were of course a Friday night team then, but the dictats of the FL said that the first game had to be on the Saturday. I still played cricket in those days so the call of an Ashton 2nd team CLL encounter at Littleborough, (from memory), had my prior attention.
