The programme style in 1977/78.
..
The programme is from the 1-0 home win over Darlington on 24th February, (Eddie Prudham getting the winner), in front of a decent crowd for those days of 4,716. There’s a good view of EP from the air, showing clearly the rear part of the “Popside”, which was to be demolished a couple of years later. Also, on the right, is the Cheadle End as it stood until the aftermath of the Bradford fire led to it’s demolition in 1985.

THE YEAR OF SUMMERBEE; OLD TRAFFORD & MR WILLIS
..
Not a bad home record for me in 1978. We started the year 6th In Division 4, (Tier 4), and added a further 6 home wins before the end of the 1977/78 season. But it wasn’t sufficient to challenge the promotion spots as precisely 3 points on our travels from the 12 away games after the turn of the year, (2 points for a win in those days, meaning just the one win and a draw), saw County fall 12 places to an eventual finish of 18th. It was a close call, only 3 places away from having to put in an application for re-election. The dismal form saw player-manager Alan Thompson being replaced by his own signing, Mike Summerbee.
The 1978/79 season saw decent home form for me. 8 wins, (sandwiching that unforgettable, for all the wrong sort of reason!), night at Old Trafford left us in 9th place as the year came to an end. It was still dismal stuff on the road though – a single win from 11 League games.
I missed 2 home games in 1978, both within the space of 5 days. They were a League Cup win over Shrewsbury and a 3-0 triumph over Darlington. I know for a fact that I was on holiday in Torquay at the time … for the simple reason that I witnessed the Gulls take on Northampton on the day that we beat Darlington!!
I recall particularly two home games from 1978. In mid October Barnsley were the visitors. They stood 2nd and we were 7th, and the honours were shared in a goalless draw.. It drew a crowd of 9,054 to EP on a misty Friday evening. It was a crowd for a League game at EP that I wouldn’t see bettered for nearly 15 years until Stoke came in April 1993. Indeed for much of the intervening period the terraces were, on the whole, sparsely populated.
A couple of days before New Years Eve, Pompey came. It was a Friday night, but the level of their support that evening was almost unbelievable. They had fruitless journey though. We won 4-2 with an outstanding performance. The goals came from Les Bradd; Stuart Lee, (2) and Summerbee. It was a great way to end the year.
