BLACK SUNDAY AT SALTERGATE
..
The page on 1989 ended with us in 3rd position and well placed for a first promotion in 23 years. Two early wins, (away at Colchester and at home to Burnley), saw the year off to a good start. But then things faltered. There were only 4 wins in the next 17 games, and with 4 games left we had slipped to 9th, 3 points off the last play-off place. It needed a real change in form and it came, In the space of 8 days there were three wins, and it all came down to the last day trip to the Shay.
The events of that fateful afternoon are covered in far greater detail on the post on The Shay. Suffice it to say a win for County and a draw or worse for Southend would see us promoted automatically. Goals from Chris Beaumont and Ian McInerney did the business for us, but despite the misinformation floating around at the Shay, Southend picked up a win, and our fate was to face the play-offs. It was to be Chesterfield, and the comprehensive 3-1 over the Spireites a week prior to the Halifax game gave us hopes. They were to be dashed to some tune as recounted in the post on Saltergate. However, reflecting on the 89/90 campaign, County had improved immensely under Bergara’s tutelage and we looked forward to the forthcoming season.
Having seen 4 keepers during 89/90, (Siddall; Redfern; Muggleton and Barrett), Bergara went for a very experienced replacement in Paul Cooper who made the short trip from Maine Road, and had well over 500 career appearances under his belt. Angell had disappeared to Southend in somewhat distasteful circumstances. He had made his debut at Seamer Road and in the post relating to that ground there’s more detail about his move.
His replacement was Paul A Williams, (left) whose record hardly bore much scrutiny. 3 goals in 43 league appearances, spread over 4 clubs didn’t inspire much confidence. But Bergara had clearly spotted something. By then end of 1990 he had hit the target 10 times, and a further 7 by mid March 1991 saw his move to WBA, (more fully addressed in the post about Watling Street).

1990/91 started off ok. 8 wins in the 20 games up to the turn of the year saw us standing but there were more draws than victories. The good thing was that only 3 defeats in the League, (despite first round exits from the League and FA Cups, at the hands of Burnley and Rotherham respectively), left us handily placed for another promotion push. We stood 6th, with Doncaster leading the way. The next 4 and a half months were integral to the success we were to enjoy throughout the decade.
I made it to all 24 home games in 1990, and added a further 19 on the road. County had by this time come to be a really big part of my life, and with the improvements that we had seen in the 20 months that Bergara had been in charge “game days” were now approached with a degree of expectation rather then the fond hope, (some may say ‘delusion’), that had featured in my days following the Hatters up to that point.
