ADMINISTRATION – A TRULY SORRY TALE

On 30th April 2009 Stockport County Association Football Club Limited was officially placed into administration. It was a decision arising from the transfer of ownership in 2005 from Cheshire Sports to the Supporters Trust, and was based on a totally unsustainable business model. Leonard Curtis, a firm well versed in business recovery, but absolutely no experience of football as a business, were appointed as Administrators.
It led to a 13 month period when the future of the Club was in the balance. A dreadful time for County supporters, who not only saw the team relegated, but were largely in the dark as to what the future might hold.

The fans turned out to protest at the lack of progress and marched to Leonard Curtis’ offices, via Stockport Town Hall and the PFA. Promises of a deal were made, but as before, came to naught. In the middle of this we were relegated, but that was of little import in the grander scheme of things

The Melrose deal continued to fail, but the 2015 Group stepped in. A deal was struck and the Club saved. But 12 months down the line it looked like a case of “out of the frying pan…”

This reflects on the events in the 15 months after we came out of admin, and together with some comment of mine, is a reproduction of an article which was originally on the “200%” website. As at March 2024 the website looks as though it no longer exists so the decision to reproduce the article was useful.

The summer of 2011 saw another inglorious episode. A proposed takeover by Merseyside business man Tony Evans rose and fell, leaving along the way a new manager; a new team, and the challenge of non-league football. It set the Club back not only the 10 weeks he was around but was another paving stone on the road to regional football

With Evans gone, and no sign of any other takeover fans became agitated leading to Your Town Your Team. The Board turned to Spencer Fearn, (pictured with Peter Snape). Some good ideas, but none of them very successful – financial pressures were growing … again

2013 was a year of infamy in the history of SCFC. Blue skies thinking; a foreign manager with no knowledge of non-league football financial instability and a reaction to relegation which condemned us to 6 years in regional football
