The Programme style for 2019/20
..
This issue is from an early season game against Eastleigh, one of a number of teams which made its first ever appearance at EP following our promotion to the National League.
The front cover is very reminiscent of those football magazines of years ago – publications like ‘Shoot’. Definitely something different. I’m still a great fan of a hard copy programme, although there are signs that there are moves towards ‘on-line’ only offerings. The first time I came across that was at Barnet, (in the FA Cup game in December 2018). Not my cup of tea, but there again I’m from the old school, who still orders CD’s rather than downloads!!
Six home games for me before the pandemic arrived. And 5 of those were against opposition making their EP debut, (Barnet being the exception), and all from the south too. The results were poor. In the League there was further evidence, which had been apparent all season, that most southern teams in the National League seemed to pass us off the field; with sharp counter attacking and almost always had a ‘target man’ up front. Not a big bustler, but very mobile front men. Certainly my friends and acquaintances in E Block of the Main Stand yearned for something similar.
Maybe that was put in place with the signing of Richie Bennett just before ‘lockdown’ and the premature end of the season. I had seen him on many occasions in my travels around the Tameside grounds – he had previously played for Mossley and Curzon Ashton. He made his debut at Maidenhead in the last game played prior to the cessation of football. It had been a busy time as well in terms of planning for the 2020/21 season. Liam Hogan and Lois Maynard had arrived from Salford. Clearly the new ownership under Mark Stott was intent on pushing us back into the Football League – I look forward to the resumption, (whenever that might be), to see the next stage.
The other game was a Trophy replay against Dorking, from the National League South. We had high hopes of going one better than 12 months previously, when we fell at the semi-final stage. But on a coolish Tuesday evening we were taken to task. The score tells it all……
