This game was the 8th in the Conference after relegation from League 2 the previous summer. I had been under no illusion that non-league would be an easy ride. After all, I had seen enough of it on my non-County travels over many years. And the previous 7 games had demonstrated this. Only 1 game had been lost, but equally there was only a single win, (against Kettering in the first non-league home game in well over 100 years.
It brought a return to the Bucks Head, 24 years after the last of two visits. Things had changed – it was a new Club, (AFC Telford United being formed out of the ashes of our previous opponents, Telford United), and the ground had been completely rebuilt. Long gone were the stands beloved of non league grounds and in their place was a modern construction.
Whatever the case, this 3rd visit still left us without a win in that part of Shropshire – that had to wait for me until 2015. Sean Newton, who was to move to County by the end of the season opened the scoring for the Bucks, which was quickly equalised by an outstanding goal from Antonio German in front of a decent County following in the Frank Nagington Stand. The performance did however confirm to me that the season was going to be a struggle. It hadn’t taken much ‘nous’ to work out that however gifted a footballer Hamann was he was singularly ill-suited to management in non-league. The next 8 games brought but 6 points…..
