Jim Gannon had returned in November 2011, and after a desperate start, as he began the process of weedling out the ‘social loafers’, things had started to look up. The 5 games prior to the trip to North Street had seen 3 wins and a draw, so the trip over into Derbyshire promised more of the same. How far from the truth could that be!
A shocking start to the game saw us go a goal behind in the first minute with Alfreton’s lead doubled in the 25th minute. Shortly before half-time came one of the worst penalty decisions I have ever seen. Ian Ormson was adjuged to have tripped an opposition forward by referee Stockbridge. He was really well positioned 40 yards behind play. My friend, Peter Tyldesley, former referee in the FL, was incandescent. Never a penalty in the memory of man he opined – we were both no more than 3 yards away!!. A 2 goal deficit would have been hard to recover from, but the third made it almost impossible. The second half was about damage limitation.
Only the damage wasn’t limited. It was 6 when we turned for the exit, and what couldn’t even be described as a consolation from Jordan Rose left us on the end of a 6-1 defeat. A night to forget.
It wasn’t to get much better – we went down by 5 at Southport 11 days later, and only a late run saved us from the relegation to regional football … but only for 12 months.
