The penultimate home game of the 2013/14 season, our first in regional football for well over 100 years, pitched County against local rivals Altrincham. The reverse game at Moss Lane very early in the campaign saw an excellent County following witness a humbling 3-0 defeat. A season where County fans had confidently expected a title push had crumbled long before and it had been a time of visiting places which would never, ever have been contemplated as a destination.
So a ‘derby’ game provided some opportunity to look to wind up the season on more of a high. Alty were looking to push for the title. They didn’t manage that in the end but were promoted through the play-offs, beating Guiseley in the final. It drew a good crowd to EP on a Good Friday evening. 3,770 turned, up the best of the season, and as ever, with something to play for a game under the lights provided the atmosphere which had been so sadly lacking for most of the season.
The game ended goalless. No shock that we didn’t score – after all it had been 6 games since Phil Jevons had notched a hat-trick against Guiseley – the last time we hit the net. But a battling defensive display gave us a point.
County fans were reasonably content with the point but far more so in the fact that Ryan McKnight’s spell as CEO was approaching its last days. It had been announced a week or so previously that he was to leave at the end of the season. For that we all had occasion to be more than content.
