The famous victory at Roker Park put us in the draw for the 3rd Round of the League Cup, and a plum fixture came out of the velvet bag. Arsenal at Edgeley Park. Any County fans who saw the one and only previous meeting of the clubs at EP would have been well into pension age. It was 65 years previously, back in January 1915 when the Gunners came out on top 3-1.

It was the same result all those years later. Twelve months previously Palace had visited EP and Oshor Williams had made his debut and given Kenny Sansom a chasing he was unlikely to forget. The full back had moved to Arsenal in the interim and had the better of things this time round. The gulf in status of the two teams was apparent. Both stood ninth in their respective divisions at the time of the game, but three tiers separated them.

Future County interim manager John Hollins gave Arsenal an early lead after an error from Dave Lawson in the County goal; Alan Sunderland doubled it shortly after half time and Frank Stapleton put the game to bed late on. There was still time for Les Bradd to notch a consolation.

It was good to see one of the ‘great and good’ teams turn out on the Park. It drew a crowd of 11,635, which to this day has only been bettered once, (against Middlesbrough in the League Cup semi-final in 1997). Arsenal have not crossed our path since then, meaning that in 107 years we have me them just the once. Oh for a Cup run, and maybe a chance to go to The Emirates!

  1. I remember this game, as I recall we were never really in the game once they scored.

My memory must be playing tricks on me, as I could have sworn that Dean Emerson was playing that night?

    1. My recollection too – even from a distance of 40+ years. Bradd’s goal was little but consolation, but a well received one at that!

Emerson didn’t make his debut until Feb 1982. One of the players that Eric Webster found and then sold for a decent fee which kept the Club alive. My piece on Eric, (‘An Unsung Hero’) highlights this.
