In the 850 away games I have seen, the win at Bloomfield Road in August 2004, has only been bettered twice. There was a 5-0 win at the Darlington Arena in 2007, and more latterly a 6-0 win at the Deva Stadium in April 2019, which provided probably the most complete all-round performance I have seen from a County team in many years.

The 4 goal win over Blackpool was one of only eight victories over the Seasiders in 28 attempts and on reflection was one of the most unlikely, despite the fact that Blackpool had been defeated in thoer two opening games.. It was the 3rd game of the season and County also went into it pointless after two 3-2 defeats by Huddersfield and Colchester. As it turned out it was a win which was only repeated once in the subsequent 18 games, which saw the end of Sammy McIlroy’s tenure in the EP hot seat.

10 minutes into the game Danny Jackman put us into the lead, and by half time it was two, after Warren Feeney hit home a rebound after a shot from Rickie Lambert cam back off the bar. Two goals from Luke Beckett, who had started the season well after being out injured for much of the previous campaign, sealed the win. Beckett was to move onto Sheffield United within weeks – a real loss of a striker remembered fondly at EP.

Driving back along the M55 hoped were high of an improvement from the sorry fare we had witnessed since the turn of the millenium. It was but a fond delusion……
