The heady joy of the victory over QPR in the 3rd Round left County fans eagerly awaiting the draw for the next round. And we weren’t disappointed as it looked like Liverpool were to be the visitors to EP. But first of all they had to get over the hurdle that Bristol City presented them.
In the meantime tickets were snapped up for a meeting which all who purchased assumed would be against the same team that had seen real cup heroics back in 1965. They met at Ashton Gate and the game was abandoned due to floodlight failure with the score 1-1. It was the same when they tried again but this time the match went the full distance and they headed off for a replay at Anfield. The Robins snatched a surprise 1-0 win and County fans started thinking of a first 5th round appearance since a tie, coincidentally also against Liverpool, in 1950.
The tie was scheduled for January 29th, only 4 days after Bristol’s win at Anfield. The game was postponed with the EP pitch in an appalling state. Things got under way 11 days later. What a let down!
County were standing 2nd in Division 2, (3rd Tier) going into the game and since the QPR match had won a couple of league games; progressed in the Autoglass Trophy with a win over Scunthorpe bu had lost to Fulham the previous weekend. But still in decent from, and set to face a side in mid-table in the Division above. A disastrous start saw us go behind in the first 5 minutes, and there was to be no recovery. Wayne Allison ran the County defence ragged grabbing a 19 minute hat-trick to leave us 4 adrift with 20 minutes to go. Desperately disappointing -and we had to wait for another 8 years to appear in Round 5. But nowhere near as disappointing as the events that were to unfold at Wembley 3 and a half months later….
