When Chester City arrived at EP in mid December 1984, the heady days of the magnificent performances against Liverpool had faded away, even though they were but 10 weeks previously. Since then nine league games had brought a meagre 6 points and we lay in 17th place. We needed an improvement if a battle to avoid the re-election places, (no automatic relegation then), was to be avoided.
As ever, in the Eric Webster era, there was only a small squad and the team had remained virtually unchanged all season. There had been a couple of loan signings brought in, (Paul O’Berg and Phil Malley), but we had also seen the departure of long time favourite Oshor Williams and also Steve Taylor, and the Chester game saw another new face in Andy Crawford.
..
The game started off at a real pace and by the time the match clock struck 20 minutes we were 4-0 up. John Kerr, (pictured), opened the scoring then Clive Evans and Paul Hendrie made it three before Kerr doubled his tally.
..
There were fond expectations around the ground that we could go on to run up a cricket score. Not the sort of tally that would challenge the record breaking 13 that we managed against Halifax all those years previously but maybe challenging the 7 at Valley Parade in 1965.
It wasn’t to be. Chester pulled one back on the half hour, before Kerr restored the 4 goal advantage just after the break, and in doing so completed his hat-trick. It was the first treble by anyone other than Micky Quinn since Eddie Prudham signed off his County career with one nearly five years previously, and was also the first time we had scored 5 since beating Morecambe in the Cup in 1978.
It wasn’t too long before it was bettered. A couple of months later Aldershot were put to the sword to the tune of 6-0.
