The heady days of the opening fortnight of the 2015/16 season, when 3 wins and 2 draws had seen us heading the table, had long dissipated. My fears about the sort of team and style that Neil Young would bring had been borne out. Short termism; ill discipline, and a ludicrous turn over of players had seen 4 wins in the following 17 games, added to exits from the FA Cup, (against Fylde), and the FA Trophy in an ignominious defeat at the hands of Nantwich. We had seen 32 players before the trip to Steel park, and that in 22 games!

And there was another that afternoon. Chatting with Jeff and Ian Dooley prior to the game the team came out to warm up and even though many faces weren’t too familiar there was another new one. This time it was Chris Smalley, and later gossip amongst the County faithful seemed to suggest that he had been signed on the morning of the game and had not met the team beforehand. If true, then it is a great example of all that was wrong.

The record books show that this was the first ever meeting between the Clubs, and it turned out to be a comfortable County win after a goalless first half. Karl Ledsham gave us the lead, and Jonny Margetts notched twice from the spot. In between the two penalties there was great rejoicing as Kayode Odejayi hit the target. He was always well regarded by County fans at the time – but for a striker was hardly a prolific marksman. His goal in the 67th minute was only his second of the season, and was the highlight of the win.

It was the 8th, and turned out to be the last, win of Young’s era. The next 4 games brought just a single point. It was a run in which a dreadful trip to Boston saw us go down 4-0, with the County fans aghast that Assistant Manager Gary Jones seemed to spend more time shuttling between the dug-out and the team coach than undertaking what might be regarded as his proper job during the course of the game. Young was gone in early January – it had been an awful few months.
