For many years one of the staple County songs has contained the line “.. we beat Palace ..and West Ham too”. The references were to games in 1972 and a League Cup run to the 4th Round the furthest we had reached until the annus mirabilis of 1996/97.
Seven years later Palace returned to EP, for the first leg of a Second Round tie. We had beaten Wigan to reach that stage, but the league campaign had started poorly- with only one point, from a draw with Rochdale to show for our efforts. Palace had three draws under their belt, one of which was at Maine Road 11 days prior to the game at EP.
The game saw the debut for County of Oshor Williams, signed from Southampton for £10,000, and what a start it was. He gave England full-back Kenny Sansom the chasing of his life – and that Wednesday evening an EP hero was born. A mainstay of the team until departing for Port Vale 5 years later he is still more than fondly remembered by those who saw the team in the early 80’s, and of course still has a close connection with the Club, writing a column in the matchday programme to this day.
..
Oshor, (pictured), was with the Club in some hard years, and for much of the time Eric Webster was manager. There was clearly a huge amount of mutual respect, and on Eric’s death in 2016 Williams, by then an PFA official, wrote a moving tribute which is still available on the PFA site. It can be read here.

As to the cup tie itself it was a good game. Palace took the lead early on, but a Phil Henson equaliser shortly afterwards ended the scoring for the night. It was all to play for at Selhurst Park a week later, but on a night when keeper David Lawson was injured with the substitute, (only one in those days), already used it was a bitter experience. We lost 7-0!!
