I had visited Dartford 22 years prior to the visit to Princes Park in 2013. That was a game against another team, (Maidstone United), and at another ground, (Watling Street). This time we were 7 games into the disastrous experiment with Darije Kalezic in charge but under the overall control of Ryan McKnight. The appointment had to most, if not all, County supporters been seen as an act of madness. And so it was proving. The seven games had seen a gross accumulation of seven points, and as we travelled south that Tuesday afternoon the spectre of relegation was more than apparent.
I had travelled down with Mark and Ryan Chapman. It hadn’t been the easiest of trips with long hold ups on the A1, but after we got there still with time to spare, Mark and Ryan went in search of a pint and I had a wander around the ground. The team turned up and there seemed to be be some consternation, and word came out that Stuart Watkiss, assistant manager, had been taken ill. Hardly the best start to proceedings. And it hardly got better from the managerial perspective. Kalezic seemed totally disconnected with what was going on as the game proceeded.
As it turned out we took an early lead through on-loan Mark Cullen, (one of the few bright spots of that dreadful three months), as he reacted to a rebound after a shot from Adnan Cirak. It truly was one of the less than a handful of contributions that Cirak made, (the other being the equaliser against Gateshead at Hartlepool in the penultimate game of the season). It occasioned great rejoicing on the terraces.
..
Celebrations after Cullen’s goal. Mark on the left bemused that Cirak has actually contributed and Ryan, (in the yellow Bounab shirt he procured!), showing a bit more enthusiasm!!
..
We kept the lead until a quarter of an hour from time when Dartford equalised. A point really wasn’t enough and that made it 5 games without a win. Kalezic lasted 4 more games, but the die was cast. Regional football it was to be in 2013/14.
