All I know is that Priestfield is a long way. I’ve made it 4 times, and have yet to see a victory, with the only solace being a scoreless draw in the FA Cup in late 2008. And the first visit came at a point when seemingly we were seeing a game every 3 days or so. It was in 1996/97 and we played there on 16th April. In the previous two weeks we had played 5 games, and immediately prior to the long haul down south for a Wednesday game had been in action on the Saturday and Monday, and the last two midweeks had seen us on the road at Bournemouth and Plymouth. It was a programme to test not only the players but also the fans who not only found it s strain in terms of time but also on the wallet.

The team had remained virtually unchanged over that period, which had seen the introduction of what turned out to be short term signings Ken Charlery and Gordon Cowans. We did know prior to the game that Luis Cavaco would be missing, having suffered a broken leg against Watford 48 hours previously. But there was some solace. Chris Marsden was available for action again after an absence of 5 games, but Brett Angell was still missing.

Coming into the game we were 4 points behind leaders Bury, and 2 behind 2nd placed Brentford, but with a couple of games in hand on both of them. The problem was that 6 remaining fixtures had to be fitted in in the space of 17 days. Tiredness was going to be a factor and so it proved that evening. A quite remarkable following had made its way down to Kent, and witnessed a performance which reflected the efforts that had been put in over the recent weeks. It was something that we hadn’t seen for a long time, and after Steve Butler had put the Gills in the lead on the half hour we didn’t really create too much. So a 1-0 defeat it was.

Returning northwards on the Fingerpost Flyer there was much discussion as to whether we would make the cut for automatic promotion or face play-off agony again. The history books provide the answer to that, as 12 days later at Saltergate things were settled. But prior to that another defeat at Preston, who performed a Dick Turpin act to snatch the points at Deepdale, and two very edgy wins against York and Wycombe tested the nerves of County fans to the utmost!!
