Over the years there’s been plenty of dire games, but I always point to this one as a nadir. We were heading for the Conference; Peter Ward had been in charge for around 9 weeks since the sacking of Simpson, but wasn’t for this game. The previous evening the Board, (the constituted of the two Gibbons; Snape; Taylor; Clark and Graham had decided Ward’s tenure had come to an end. All well and good – that’s within the prerogative of the Board. But with a game the following evening they didn’t bother with a replacement. It may be apocryphal but there was plenty of chat around the Crown Ground in a miserable evening that the team had turned up with no-one in charge. Legend, and probably truth, has it that Ray Mathias took on the role in order to fulfil the FL regulations. It really was absolutely symptomatic of the biblical scale mismanagement at that time.

On the pitch we were 3-0 down by half time, and after that Accrington declared to spare us further punishment. It ended that way. By 9.30 that evening we were rock bottom of the table, 4 points from safety, but having played 6 games more. There was to be no coming back. The remaining 10 games produced 10 points with Mathias officially in charge. The Conference was to be our next port of call.
