When the fixture schedule gave us a trip to the Recreation Ground in March 2011 it was a first visit for County in 20 years. Aldershot as they then were had ‘gone bust’ in 1992. The phoenix club, Aldershot Town, had climbed through the non-league pyramid eventually reaching the League in time for 2008/09. With County being in League 1 for 2 seasons our paths didn’t cross until 2010/11. We had drawn at EP in the autumn, but from new year onwards it had been a desperate time. Three managers; fourteen games; 8 points and 30 players in that period tells its own tale. Relegation was not yet certain but looking highly likely. We were rock bottom, only 5 games from safety but 5 games adrift. A win at the Rec was essential.

And whilst a point wasn’t really enough, a decent County following that day were probably content as the ‘added time’ was announced. A battling performance had kept the home attack at bay, even if there was little up front. A point was better than nothing. But just as we were thinking about making the way to the exit, and the pleasant walk though the adjoining park, a last gasp winner gave Aldershot the points. It was a truly dispiriting, and long, drive home.
