Ashton United have been my ‘second’ team for 44 years since I first started playing for Ashton CC. Many of my friends on the cricket field were regulars at Hurst Cross and on non-County days it was a place I headed to frequently and still do. So in December 2018 it was a matter of some regret, but also the right thing to do, when I had to miss the game at Hurst Cross. The reason why is outlined on the post “Grounds I Missed“. I had seen a number of County friendlies there over the years but never in competitive action.

The return at EP came in the third week of March 2019, three days after exiting the FA Trophy at the semi-final stage in an acrimonious encounter with Fylde. A win was vital to ensure that the battle with Chorley for the automatic promotion place, The Ashton team had a fair smattering of players who had turned out in the County colours – Sam Sheridan; Craig Hobson; Kallum Mantack and Paul Ennis. Nyal Bell and Adam Thomas gave us a comfortable two goal lead going into the last 20 minutes, but a Robins goal made for a nervy ending.

At the end of the season both teams parted company with the NLN – County of course were promoted, whilst Ashton headed for the Northern Premier League
