Blyth Spartans was a name which I had heard a lot about in my travels with Arthur Brotherton. Whenever it came time for the FA Cup 1st Round draw the thoughts turned to a banana skin tie on some god forsaken field in the middle of nowhere. And each time we discussed where it might be Arthur always referred back to an FA Cup defeat at Croft Park, Blyth back in December 1971. He always avowed it to be one of the most shameful days he had witnessed. We did take some form of revenge in 1995 when a 2nd Round tie at EP went our way. It was a further 22 years before anothet meeting. The NLN game at EP in October 2017 took place without my presence, as I lay in Manchester Royal Infirmary, and I listed to the dulcet tones of Jon Keighren describe a late capitulation as we went down 3-1.
The reverse fixture came at the end of April 2018 as we sought to keep a foothold in the play-off spots. A glorious day on the North East coast, and it was one not to miss. A new ground, and plenty to play for. A decent County following made its way up the A1, and saw a tight game decided by a Jimmy Ball strike just on the half time whistle. The win contributed to a play-off tie with Chorley, when a huge EP crowd saw a County team which ‘failed to turn up on the night’. We had to wait a further 12 months to exit the NLN.
