Burton Albion were on the up and County on the way down when we met in season 2010/11. These were the first games against a team from the brewing town for well over a century. We had previously played Burton Swifts and Burton Wanderers, before they joined together to become Burton United. We faced them in Division 2 (Tier 2) action between 1901 and 1907.

County had dropped into the fourth tier in advance of the 2010/11 season, whilst Burton were in thier second season, after a runaway title win in the Conference in 2008/09. We travelled to the Pirelli Stadium on a pleasant autumn afternoon hardly in the best of form. Paul Simpson had taken over but the influx of new players had hardly brought unqualified success. Nine league games prior to meeting the Brewers had seen 11 points who were on the same total.

Paul Turnbull gave County an early lead, and it remained that way until 25 minutes from time. There the followed a brace from Aaron Webster in the space of 4 minutes and that was that.

..

I particularly recall Chairman Alwyn Thompson, (pictured), making a presentation to Burton officials before the game to mark the first meeting between the Clubs. Little did we know at that point that Thompson, who had come in as Chairman after the exit from administration in the summer had but 10 weeks or so left in the job. He had gone by the turn of the year and the catcalysmic ‘watch’ of the 2010 Group was beginning to unfold.
