On my post on the Abbey Stadium I refer to the tourist delights of Cambridge, and equally quickly note that the home of Cambridge United is far from being included in the. Stuck on a road out of town I assume that it is hardly a familiar port of call for the academics and students, and would never reside in the tourist guide books.

Whilst I have on one occasion, (in December 1985) spent the afternoon before a night game perusing Kings Chapel and the environs the late season match in 1989/90 wasn’t one of them. Making the trip with Arthur Brotherton he preferred a trip to some aerodrome in the Fens to satiate his desire for aircraft spotting. There then followed a late afternoon session involving Abbots Ale before heading to the Abbey.

We had beaten Gillingham in mid March to go 2nd in the table, and automatic promotion was there for the taking. There then followed a disastrous run of 6 games which brought us only 4 points, and even a win against Carlisle the previous Friday had left us in 8th spot with a job to get a play off spot. Putting it simply a win was absolutely vital.

And a win there was. Brett Angell, (pictured), gave County the lead just on half-time. It was a nervy second period, with the Hatters holding on, and so it was to the great relief of the travelling contingent when Angell latched onto a long ball forward, got behind the defence, and despatched the second past Cambridge keeper John Vaughan. It made for a pleasant rip back up the A1.

..

The win lifted County to 4th place with 2 games left. The history books show that we won both of of those, (beating Chesterfield and Halifax), but in the end that barren spell earlier in April cost us an automatic promotion place. The way in which that last afternoon unfolded is described in full detail on the post about The Shay
