Over the years there’s been many significant games. Championship level football; league cup semi-finals; play-offs and many more. So to describe a humble Cheshire Senior Cup tie as significant may seem strange. But, rest assured it was.

Since Jim Gannon had been sacked after the Mansfield game in January 2013 I had seen 143 games. They had produced 49 wins; 38 draws and therefore 56 defeats. We had seen 4 permanent managers; relegation to regional football, and a Club which had been reduced to ashes off the field. With regard to the latter the desperate days of ‘blue skies thinking’ had thankfully been put behind us and stability had been restored. The Neil Young ‘experiment’ had quickly failed, and he stepped down in early January 2016 and if an escape from the National League North wad to be achieved then the next appointment had to be the ‘right one’. The clamour for the return of Gannon grew and was satisfied the day before the game at Congleton. From that point the Club has been on an upwards trajectory. And that is why this particular game was so significant.

A fair following from County travelled into mid Cheshire on a bitterly cold evening. Gannon was hailed as he emerged from the dressing room. It was a game where he would look at the players he had inherited. We won the game 2-0, (goals from Sean O’Hanlon and John Marsden), but we all knew that the remainder of the season was going to be about planning for 2016/17. Of the 16 players on duty that evening only 5 made it as far as the next season. The climb back had begun.
