Having just failed to edge into the play-offs at the end of 2006/07 hopes were high that 2007/08 would be the year. But things had been disappointing, and making our first ever trip to Victoria Road we stood in 10th place, and 10 points adrift of the automatic promotion spots. But there were signs of an improvement. It’s always a theme amongst County supporters that Jim Gannon’s teams improve in the second half of the season, and it looked like this was going to be the case. After losing at Shrewsbury on Boxing Day the next 5 games had brought 4 wins and a draw. So Jeff and I made the trip with some hope.

Jim McNulty had been signed from Macclesfield and had made his debut in mid January. A series of postponements meant that the game at Dagenham was only his third appearance. He certainly added something to the defence, and played an important role as the season unfolded.

It was Dagenham’s first season in the League, a campaign which had started at EP on the first day. It occasioned press coverage naturally, but sadly, for the media looking for an angle seemed to centre on the fact that Dagenham had travelled on the day; picking up the train in Euston and then having to hump the kit bag down Castle Street. I would have thought that some coverage of their achievement in reaching the league, and a bit about football, would have merited more publicity.

The games started off brilliantly. Leon McSweeney rifled one in from distance after 6 minutes, Despite threatening more that was the only goal of the game. Three points and there were plenty more to come.

The next 14 games brought 11 wins; 2 draws and just the single defeat, (at home to Bury occasioning the classic photo after Conrad Logan was sent off and Adam Proudlock replaced him in goal!)
