DARLINGTON 1883

..

..

The original Darlington, familiar opposition for so many years, went into administration in 2012, after the disastrous move into the Darlington Arena. They were expelled from the Football Association. A new Club Darlington 1983 was formed and were placed in the Northern Premier League. The ‘1883’ was dropped from their name in 2017 but has been used on this site to differentiate the two completely separate entities..

The game in April 2018 was of little consequence in terms of league placings. It was the last game of the season, and even though we had won up at Blyth seven days previously results elsewhere meant that we would end up in 5th place and that Chorley would be coming to EP a few days later in the Paly-off elimination round. So we saw some changes as squad players were given a game. Ian Ormson, Harry Brazel and Bohan Dixon, bit part players in the previous couple of months, started and in the second half we saw a debut from Szymon Czubik, as he came off the bench. Only 5 of the starting XI were to feature in the team the following Wednesday,

Whatever the case, a game of no consequence drew a massive crowd of 6,163. a record for the National League North and South, and included a healthy following of 411 from the North East. (Photo from ‘All Things Stockport County’)

It was the biggest gate at EP since the game against Tamworth in April 2012, (6,393). Prior to that 7,208 had seen a dismal display in May 2010 as we parted company with League 1, and opposition Tranmere exited at the other end of the table. Strange then that both Clubs were to be in non-league not too long afterwards.

The game itself saw Darlington take the lead in the first half with Dan Cowan equalising half way through the second period following a determined run and a fierce shot. But if truth is know, that the thoughts of the vast majority of the crowd were om the following Wednesday. History records that the hopes and expectations were dashed in an immensely disappointing exit from the play-offs.
