It’s probably fait to say that not many County fans would have heard of Dorking Wanderers before the FA Trophy tie early in 2020. The Club was only founded in 1999, and had made impressive strides in climbing through the pyramid. 2019/20 was their first season in the National League South, and as such marked the highest place in their short history.

The tie at EP came after a draw three days previously at the Meadowbank Stadium. Trips like that for me had long disappeared into the past. The prospect of a 400+ miles round trip was far beyond my capabilities. So the dulcet tones of Jon Keighren provided me with the action. When Adam Thomas gave us the lead 20 minutes or so into the second half, it looked as though the impressive run we had in the Trophy the previous year, (semi final losers to Fylde), might be replicated. A fond delusion as the hosts equalised only a few minutes later. So back to EP it was.

It was a salutary experience. A team which had put 5 past Halifax on Boxing Day and followed that with a win at Fylde were completely outplayed. Darling defended well, but it was their speed on the break which caught the eye. One up in the first five minutes they had doubled it by 20 minutes, and then added 2 more in the second half. County had no idea how to match this and the final 4-0 scoreline represented the second time in 2019/20 that we had gone down by this score. Torquay had taken us to task in September, Revenge was sweet in that case as we went and won 5-1 at Plainmoor only a matter of weeks later. There could be no revenge tis time. A Trophy exit. Dorking fell in the next round, beaten at home by Fylde.
