I think that one of the highlights of our return to the National League in 2019/20 was Frank Mulhern’s goal at Dover at the end of October. See it here – truly spectacular. It provided the winner down at the Crabble Ground.

The season saw the very first meetings with Dover – and unfamiliar opposition also presented itself in the form of Eastleigh; Boreham Wood; Bromley; Sutton United and Dorking Wanderers. the length of the trip to Dover kept a visit to the Crabble off my agenda, so their visit on 1st February was my first sighting. It wasn’t a good experience. Since the two Christmas week wins against Halifax and Fylde we were winless in 6 games, (with 4 league matches producing just two draws, added to the FA Trophy exit in the replay against Dorking).

There was much anticipation as the crowd gathered at EP. Danny Lloyd, (pictured), had returned on a loan spell from Salford, and there was great anticipation that a repeat of the form he displayed in the 2016/17 season, (including 28 goals), would help us get back on track. His first appearance had been the previous week in a defeat at Hartlepool.

The game against Dover saw us go down to 10 shortly before half time, when Paul Turnbull saw red. After the break the impressive Inih Effiong playing up front for Dover basically ran us ragged. It was a feature of many southern visitors to EP that season. Speedy target men and the ability to break quickly were features of many of the reverses that we suffered. And Effiong was no different. Two goals saw us to another defeat. The prospects of a push at the top were receding. Little did we know what the next month off the field would bring ….
