With a decent record against The Grecians it might seem strange that my highlighted game involved the biggest defeat. Indeed there were only 2 reverses in 13 games. But the match on a Friday evening in late January 1975 was a truly special one … my first County away games.
As recounted in the post on St James Park it didn’t involve a 500 mile round trip, but rather a short walk from West Avenue, Exeter. That was my home for the 3rd year I spent at Exeter University. So for a 7.30 kick off myself, and the guys I lived with, put on our coats at around 7.15, walked down the street, and paid in to watch the game from the visitors accommodation on the St James Road Terrace. It wasn’t my normal vantage point at SJP – I had watched virtually all Exeter’s home games, (during term time at least) from the Cowshed, but it was only right to stand with what, in all honesty, was a modest throng who had travelled down form SK3.
The game itself was a sign of many more like it to come over the years. County held a lead, (courtesy of Mick Hollis), going into the last 20 minutes or so, then promptly caved in, conceding 4, and leaving themselves with a trip back which would end up at Edgeley Park sometime between 4 and 5 the following morning.
For myself it was a leisurely walk back to West Avenue. The very first away game for me. Little did I know that another 849 would follow over the ensuing 45 years…….
